Cape Cod - Tuesday, June 4th

"Welcome to Cape Cod"
Our travels have taken us to a large campground close to the Cape.  Today, we traveled along the Cape highways to enjoy the beautiful views and sounds of the ocean waves as they rushed to shore.

Decommissioned Coast Guard Station
Our first stop took us to Coast Guard Beach on the Atlantic side of the Cape.  We loved standing at the top of the hill looking out over the white sand beach down below.  Several surfers were in the water waiting for the perfect wave to come to shore.  The Coast Guard station there was decommissioned several years ago and the building is now privately owned.  It still is a beautiful building in a beautiful location.  I love the wild roses that grow along the ocean.  Their flowers are in full bloom this time of year.

Wild roses are all along the New England coast.

Just north of Coast Guard Beach is Nauset Light House.  With its new paint job and light blinking a warning to the ships at sea, it is a beautiful sight.  Jim was lucky enough to catch a picture of its light blinking.

Heading still farther north on the Cape highway, we stopped at the site where Marconi transmitted the first trans-Atlantic telegram.  President Teddy Roosevelt sent the first message to King George VII in England.  The towers are no longer standing but a replica gives you an idea as to what a phenemonal feat this was.

After a delicious lunch at Moby Dick's (how appropriate), we decided to head north to Provincetown taking the scenic coastal road on the Bay side of the cape.    We drove for miles with water on the left and huge sand dunes on the right.  The power of wind and water are constantly changing the shape of the Cape so it was common to see just the tops of posts because they were covered with sand.

When we finally arrived in Provincetown, we found ourselves driving on very narrow one-way streets that made it extremely difficult for Jim to navigate through traffic.  Our truck was not meant for narrow streets.  We had planned on stopping and browsing through some of the shops but decided it was best just to get out before we hit something.

We made our final stop at Race Point Beach. We walked through the sand to get down to the water's edge where it felt wonderful to take my shoes off and walk in the Atlantic.

While at the beach, Jim was able to get some great pictures of seals.

We also enjoyed talking with a couple of retired teachers from Connecticut who were enjoying the afternoon sitting in their beach chairs and watching the waves and listening to them wash on shore.

Life continues to be good.  And our journey will continue to Plymouth Rock...
